Google has confirmed plans to remove its Play Movies & TV app on a number of key platforms.
As of June 15, 2021 the pay-TV service will be withdrawn from Roku as well as smart TV platforms from LG, Samsung, and Vizio. Instead Google is pointing users towards YouTube and YouTube TV to make further purchases and access content that they’ve already paid for.
Play Movies & TV isn’t shutting down altogether, however it will eventually be replaced by Google TV.
It should be noted that the platforms where Play Movies & TV is leaving are among the most popular Smart TV devices.
Announced last December, Google TV will both act as a replacement for Play Movies & TV, and become an aggregator for other services, Netflix, HBO Max, etc, that are available within a subscriber’s jurisdiction. It would also recommend content based on its watchlist feature.
