March 30, 2021 11.59 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

DTH satellite TV is the most used reception method for TV content in Germany, according to the Astra TV-Monitor 2020.

With 17.12 million TV households, DTH satellite reaches a market share of 45.4% (2019: 17.28 million and 45.5%). Cable TV remains in second place with 15.85 million TV households and a market share of 42.0% (2019: 16.10 million and 42.4%).

IPTV reaches 3.24 million TV households, representing a market share of 8.6% (2019: 8.1%). The number of DTT households is 1.54 million, with a market share of 4.1% (2019: 1.52 million and 4.0%).

The number of HD households in Germany increased to 33.39 million in 2020 (2019: 31.96 million). This means that 88% of all TV households in Germany receive their TV channels in HD quality. With 15.34 million households reached, DTH satellite is the leading distribution infrastructure for HD television, followed by cable TV with 13.33 million, IPTV (3.18 million) and DTT (1.54 million).

Compared to the previous year, this means an increase of 1.4 million HD households in Germany. Despite the significant growth, 4.4 million households still receive their TV channels exclusively in SD resolution.

These are the core results of the Astra TV-Monitor 2020, which market research institute Kantar collects annually on behalf of Astra satellite operator SES. The base are the 37.75 million TV households in Germany (2019: 37.97 million). The survey of a total of 6,004 households across Germany took place at the end of 2020. The figures refer to the main TV reception device of each household.
