Latvia is developing a new multimedia platform to serve minority (Russian) language speakers.
According to Ivars Abolins, the chairman of the regulator NEPLP, it will take over the functions of LTV7, which is currently the only TV channel that offers viewers news programming in minority languages.
Assuming there are no delays in the delivery of equipment due to the pandemic, the new platform will be launched this September.
NEPLP also says that it is informed that at least four market participants are currently thinking about launching new products aimed at minority audiences. Three of them talk about the possibility of creating their own content in minority languages.
The regulator adds that while not all of these projects are likely to be successful, it is clear that there is interest in this niche and it will make every effort to ensure that the projects start as soon as possible.
