Netflix has begun a crackdown on the many thousands of users that are viewing the streaming service through someone else’s account.
A number of users have reported seeing a message “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”
Once they’ve seen the message, the user is prompted to enter a code that is sent by text or email to the account holder.
A spokesperson for Netflix told Broadband TV News: “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so.”
It’s estimated that as many as one in three Netflix users watch the service outside the household of the account user.
Historically, Netflix is thought to have turned a blind eye to unauthorised viewing, but is now launching its campaign as it looks to grow subscriber numbers beyond 200 million,
Over the course of a year Netflix runs a number of different tests, though not all come to fruition.
