Total fixed broadband traffic increased by 62.5% in 2020.
This, according to the regulator ANACOM, was much higher than that seen in 2019 (28.3%) and the average of the last five years (41.6%).
The number of fixed broadband accesses increased by 193,000 (+4.9%) in 2020, reaching 4.2 million, with ultra-fast broadband accounting for 80% of total accesses.
FTTH was the main form of access to fixed broadband, accounting for 55.1% of total accesses, +4.5 pp more than in 2019. It also contributed the most to growth, +283,000, or 14.1% more accesses.
Meanwhile, cable accesses increased by 0.7% to 28.9% of the total, and ADSL continued to decline, by 22.7%.
As of the end of last year, ADSL represented 9% of total accesses, down 3.2 pp.
The leading providers of fixed broadband were Meo (40.5%), Grupo Nos (35%), Vodafone (20.7%) and the Nowo / Onitelecom Group (3.5%). Compared to the previous year, Vodafone was the provider whose share of accesses increased the most (+0.7 pp), while Meo was the provider that captured the most customers in net terms, having increased its share by 0.2 pp. The shares of the Nos and Nowo / Onitelecom Groups decreased (0.7 and 0.2 pp respectively).
Meo had the highest share of subscribers (38.9%) of residential accesses, followed by Grupo Nos (37.2%), Vodafone (19.8%), and the Nowo / Onitelecom Group (3, 9%). The shares of Vodafone and Meo increased by 0.8 and 0.2 pp respectively, while the shares of Grupo Nos and Nowo / Onitelecom decreased by 0.8 and 0.2 pp respectively.
With regard to fixed broadband traffic shares, Meo reached 38.5% at the end of 2020, followed by Grupo Nos with a share of 34.9%. The shares of Vodafone and the Nowo / Onitelecom Group were 22.7% and 3.1%, respectively. In comparison with the previous year, Nos was the provider whose share of traffic increased the most (+3.6 pp). The Meo, Nowo / Onitelecom and Vodafone shares decreased by 2.4, 0.6 and 0.1 pp respectively.
