Turkey has significantly increased a special communications tax (SCT) that applies to a range of services including internet and cable TV.
Quoting a presidential decree published on the Official Gazette, Hurriyet reports that it has gone up from 7.5% to 10% and will raise TL4.7 billion (€543 million) this year, rising to TL5.1 billion in 2022.
It adds that the tax was introduced in 1999 to help offset the economic damage caused by the Marmara earthquake and made permanent six years later.
