Anime brand Crunchyroll passed the 4 million subscriber mark in January, the company has announced.
Three million subscribers were announced in July 2020 with the UK among the top five countries with the highest number of subscribers.
The number of “daily premium active users” are watching 100 minutes a day, up from 85 minutes per day the previous year. There are also 100 million registered users.
Crunchyroll has also signed a deal with Idris and Sabrina Elba and their production companies Green Door Pictures and Pink Towel Pictures to develop a dark fantasy animated series that has the working title of Dantai.
“Gens Y and Z have experienced superhero fatigue and are hungry for the new stories and ideas that our creators tell,” said Joanne Waage, General Manager, Crunchyroll. “This development deal with Sabrina and Idris Elba is another example of how we’re working with best-in-class partners to bring in new audiences and tell fresh and compelling stories through a medium that transcends genres and generations.”
Currently in development, the Afro-futuristic science fiction series will be set in a city where the rise of biotechnology has created an ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots.
This project will complement Crunchyroll’s robust library of more than 1,000 titles and 30,000 episodes, available to fans in more than 200 countries and territories.
