Smart TV sales continue to rise in Germany in 2020

January 25, 2021 10.19 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

With around 6.6 million TV sets, 20% more smart TVs were sold in Germany last year than in 2019 (5.5 million), reports industry association Deutsche TV-Plattform with reference to GfK figures.

In total, German households bought 7.4 million TV sets in 2020. The share of smart TV sets, enabling the use of apps or catch-up services via HbbTV and the internet, stood at 89% (2019: 83%). In total, almost 47 million smart TVs have been sold in Germany since 2012.

TVs with a screen diagonal of 55 inches and larger were in particularly high demand in 2020, with around 3.2 million sold – an increase of 32% compared to 2019 (2.4 million).

“The restrictions in public life due to the Covid 19 pandemic have provided a boost to the TV business in 2020,” said Carine Chardon, managing director of Deutsche TV-Plattform in Frankfurt. “Nonetheless, the increased sales figures are good news for manufacturers and retailers – and also for content providers, because the rising market penetration of smart TVs increases the basis for the introduction of innovative services.”
