Demand for streaming services has increased OTT revenues in the Netherlands by 48 per cent year on year.
Research by Telecompaper shows the total video market was worth €620 million in the third quarter of 2020, an increase of 7.9% on the previous year. The Dutch TV-Video Market report says annual growth has doubled from the rates of 3 to 4% seen in 2019. The growth has been spurred by the arrival of Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.
“While the pandemic has clearly given a boost to demand for streaming services, growth in the OTT market was very high already at the start of this year,” said Tim Poulus, Telecompaper research analyst and co-author of the TV-Video Market report. “With more new services expected to hit the market next year, such as HBO Max and Paramount+, we don’t see 2020 as a one-off, and the growth should continue at a high level.”
While SVOD services like Netflix and Videoland represent 80% of segment revenues, it’s TVOD that is growing the fastest. Revenues have close to doubled on the year with over €28 million in Q3.
Revenues from the traditional pay-TV market were down 0.2% in Q3, the first drop since Telecompaper launched the report in 2018. In addition to subscriber erosion, fewer customers are now inclined to take additional packages, though this has been offset in part by operator price increases.
