Bavarian media authority BLM is to take on the regulation of Amazon’s Prime Video service in Europe after the UK completes its withdrawal from the European Union.
It follows an approach from Amazon Digital UK Ltd that will put Prime Video and its on-demand offer under German jurisdiction. The approach was made with the Munich-based group subsidiary Amazon Digital Germany GmbH. Amazon Digital UK Ltd has already agreed that editorial decisions regarding Prime Video in the EU are mainly made in Bavaria.
Dr Christoph Schneider, Managing Director of Amazon Prime Video Germany, said: “Prime Video has long been rooted in Bavaria and has a good working basis with the Bavarian media authority.”
Siegfried Schneider, President of BLM, added: “International companies appreciate the value of consistent but fair supervision – BLM is looking forward to the constructive cooperation with Amazon Prime Video. For the Bavarian federal state the decision means a further strengthening of the media location, for Amazon legal certainty.”
The UK and EU are now in a transition period until 31 December 2020.
