Slovakia awards 5G licences

November 24, 2020 09.47 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Slovakia’s Regulatory Office (RU) has closed the auction for frequencies in the 700 MHz band, as well as the remaining ones in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands.

According to the regulator, Orange Slovensko gained 2 x 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band. Slovak Telekom gained 2 x 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band, 2 x 3 MHz in the 1800 MHz band. Swan Mobile gained 2 x 3 MHz in the 1 800 MHz band, and O2 Slovakia gained 2 x 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band, 2 x 4.2 MHz in the 900 MHz and 2 x 3 MHz in the 800 MHz band.

The procedure started on March 31, 2020, when the predecessor of the RU, published a call for tenders. The auction was carried out in the SMRA format.

Commenting the tender, which has seen the state receive a total of €100,229,000, RU’s chairman said: “the results of the tender and the expressed interest in the auctioned frequencies confirm that the conditions as well as the tender process itself were set correctly. This fact is also confirmed by the fact that during the selection procedure. There were no problems in the qualification, auction and allocation phase of the electronic auction and the whole process was successful. The amount received by the state for the offered frequencies thus fulfilled our expectations”.

From RU’s point of view, the sold frequencies will play an important role in the future construction of new 5G networks, as well as further technological development and innovation of mobile communications in Slovakia.
