HbbTV’s self stated goal is to “harmonize the broadcast, IPTV, and broadband delivery of entertainment to the end consumer through connected TVs and set-top boxes”.
However, Android TV set-top boxes may not be considered applicable for this target device group as they generally offer access to the Google Play Store in which broadcasters can publish applications with access to their OTT service offering.
Indeed, one could argue that HbbTV is potentially irrelevant in this case given the inherently “smart” nature of Android TV devices.
