Internet content consumption is growing in Russia while the number of people watching TV continues to fall.
Quoting the findings of a study by Deloitte, ComNews reports that in terms of accessing the internet, smartphones are used by 92%, or 4pp more than last year and laptops by 77% (+3pp), while the desktops’ share remains unchanged at 70%.
Search remains the most popular activity on the net, with YouTube (87%) and VKontakte (85%) the mostly used sites.
However, the biggest growth in popularity over the last year has been seen by Instagram, up 7pp to 59%. Meanwhile, downloading films and videos is now undertaken by 70% of users, up 20pp on last year. Significantly, only 23% of Russians now consider information broadcast on TV to be accurate and the percentage who use TV fell from 94% in 2015 to 88% this year.
However, TV viewing time increased by 28% this year.
Internet TV continues to grow in popularity, being accessed by 43% of viewers, compared to 41% last year and 38% in 2018.
Cable TV usage fell from 35% in 2019 to 30% this year, and terrestrial TV from 27% to 23% over the same period.
Usage of PCs and smartphones to access TV services is also growing.
