Spain applies the most severe taxation to telecom operators in the EU.
According to El Economista, they face up to 17 different taxes, ranging from general ones and those of the sector, both at state, regional and local levels.
All told, the sector contributes 6.7% of taxes collected in the country despite generating 3.17% of GDP.
This contribution is three times that of Italy (1.93%) and double that of Germany (2.96%) and well above other neighbouring countries such as France (4.15%) and the UK (2.76%).
The figures are from a report carried out by E&Y, commissioned by the DigitalES association, which calls for a thorough review of the current fiscal framework.
