The Ukrainian incumbent Ukrtelekom has entered into a partnership with the Odessa-based ISP Sohonet.
Under the terms of the arrangement between the two parties, Sohonet has started switching its subscribers from copper technology to fibre-optics. As a result, they will be able to access the internet at speeds of up to 1Gbps rather than the current 20 Mbps.
All told, 300 subscribers will benefit from the switch this year and over 3,000 in 2021.
Igor Yaremchuk, strategy director at Ukrtelekom, said the telco sees this as a promising partnership model for other cities in Ukraine, while Andrij Verdi, CEO of Sohonet, pointed out that this is a trend being seen in other countries.
Ukrtelekom offers fixed internet services in over 130 cities and villages in the Odessa region.
