The Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) has asked the government to involve telecom operators in developing a concept for future of broadcasting in the country.
Kommersant reports that operators are opposed to the creation of a single structure of TV broadcasting on the internet and want to get TV frequencies for the development of the 5G standard.
However, media holdings and the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications are opposed to the idea of operators’ involvement in developing a concept, work on which started in January.
Alexander Shokhin, the president of RSPP, sent a letter to the deputy PM Dmitry Chernyshenko earlier this month in which he stated concerns about Vitrina TV, a company founded by National Media Group (NMG) and with the involvement of Gazprom-Media, VGTRK and Channel One, that claims the role of being the sole distributor of channels on the first and second multiplex on the internet.
The letter also proposed the creation of a system for measuring TV viewing on the internet, as well as the freeing up of terrestrial frequencies to cellular operators for 5G.
