Ultra HD (UHD) is becoming the new standard for TV sets in Germany.
In the first half of 2020, around 3.2 million TV sets were sold, almost 70% (2.2 million) of which were UHD models, reports industry association Deutsche TV-Plattform with reference to figures from GfK Retail & Technology.
Almost all of the screens (97%) support High Dynamic Range (HDR) and can therefore display content with a significantly greater contrast range and more natural colours in finer nuances.
“This is why we would like to see the production of films, series, shows, documentaries and live sports in UHD-HDR to increase further in order to close the gap between the number of devices in households and content availability,” said Carine Chardon, managing director of Deutsche TV-Plattform.
“In total, almost 14 million Ultra HD TV sets with HDR have been sold in the past five years. This shows that this fundamental change in the equipment market is in full swing,” added Chardon.
