ARTE launches new HbbTV service ‘ARTE Extra’

June 22, 2020 14.03 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

ARTE has set up a new multimedia service based on the HbbTV standard.

With ‘ARTE Extra’, the European cultural channel wants to combine the simplicity and convenience of the TV experience with the dynamics of its online offering.

Four ‘smart playlists’ are provided on various topics, consisting of programmes from the ARTE catch-up service, for example, documentaries, news programmes, history and science programmes and music. ‘ARTE Extra’ can be accessed via the red button on the remote control.

The green button on the remote control will soon be available for another function: Viewers of TV trailers will be informed via a pop-up message that they are able to switch from the linear TV programme directly to the online offer at the push of a button, enabling them to watch the programme presented in the trailer before it is shown on the linear TV channel.

“Despite the various offers for computers and smartphones, we are convinced that television also has a future on the TV screen. The merging of linear and non-linear offerings through ‘ARTE Extra’ proves ARTE’s pioneering role and offers viewers a new quality in programme experience”, said Bernd Mütter, programme director at ARTE.
