The average expenditure on telecom services in Spanish households remained stable in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Data published by the regulator CNMC, emphasising that this was the last quarter before the coronavirus pandemic struck the country, shows that average spend on quadruple packages (fixed and mobile telephony, fixed and mobile broadband) increased by approximately €1 during the year to €50.6 per month, while that for quintuple packages, which also includes pay-TV, increased by just over €2 to €80.8.
Regarding the penetration of electronic communication services, that for pay-TV increased from 35% to 40% in the year to December 31, 2019. At the same time, fixed telephony penetration fell by four percentage points.
CNMC notes that the tendency of Spanish households is to contract packaged offers. Over a third (38.6%) have broadband, fixed and mobile telephony and 35.6% add a pay-TV service. Only one in ten (9.6%) have only telephony.
In fixed broadband households 68% employ FTTH, while the migration of from xDSL to fibre continues. Indeed, the percentage of xDSL customers has fallen by 24 percentage points in the last three years.
