Ultra High Definition broadcasting is moving towards the next stage, according to SES.
Ricardo Topham, Senior Market & Business Analyst, SES said 30% of UK households already have a UHD screen at home, but admitted the broadcasters were somewhat behind. “The equipment needs to be updated on the broadcasters side. There’s a whole chain of production. It’s a pretty sizable investment. We expect the growth to keep progressing in the coming years, whether it’s overtakes each year, the same time, the point of time or not. That’s something that remains to be seen.”
According to the monitor, the UK currently has 7.9 million TVs capable of receiving Ultra HD transmissions. 3.4 million are in satellite homes, 1.5 million in cable homes and 0.6 million in IPTV homes. 2.1 million are in terrestrial homes.
Mike Chandler, who runs SES’s UK office said we were now moving towards new HD delivery, particularly for sports events. “We’re looking forward to the innovation and the delivery of HDR pictures around the different regions of the world, because I think HDR is really for so many people. The key feature that will deliver fantastic sharpness is the contrast of brightness and the dark, the ability to show complete football or rugby stadiums with that balance to pick out all the detail, without the sort of overexposure or under exposure that you get on non HDR type broadcasts.”
The SES influence over the UK market continues unabated with 17.1 million homes reached, 99.8% of all satellite homes.
