Commercial 5G debuts in Poland

May 11, 2020 12.16 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Plus has today (May 11) launched Poland’s first commercial 5G service on the 2.6 GHz TDD frequency.

It is employing a network of 100 transmitters and reaching around 900,000 people in seven cities – Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice, Lodz, Poznan, Szczecin and Wroclaw.

The second stage in the development of Plus’s services will be achieving coverage in the whole of Warsaw and surrounding towns, where over 600 additional 5G transmitters will be built, the majority by the end of the year. They will increase the total coverage to over 3 million people in seven cities.

Commenting on the launch, Miroslaw Blaszczyk, president of the management board of Cyfrowy Polsat and Polkomtel, Plus’s operator, said: “This is a very important moment for our group and our clients. We are making the first commercial 5G (service) available here and now. Ten years ago we were the first to introduce LTE to Polish homes. Today, as a technology leader in the Polish media and telecommunications market, we are introducing the first commercial 5G network in Poland, which will be available to Plus customers. And Poland joins the leading countries in the European and global technology race. I am glad that Plus customers will be the first to be able to commercially use 5G, which is the fastest wireless internet”.
