Spain’s Atresmedia Premium platform gained 90,000 paying subscribers in the first quarter, ending March with a total of 235,000.
At the same time, reports El Economista, its nearest competitor Mitele Plus, operated by Mediaset, gained only 5,000 more customers, to increase its total to 130,000.
It adds that Mitele Plus was hit by the absence of football, with competitions being suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, while Atresmedia Premium’s main focus is on fiction.
The pandemic had only a limited impact on Mediaset’s and Atresmedia’s results in the first quarter.
While the former saw its revenues grow by 1.7% to €229.8 million, the latter saw its fall by 13.2% to €223.4 million.
However, both were hard hit by the slump in TV ad spend, which fell by 23% in March.
Both groups also saw their profits fall in Q1 and expect to post much worse figures for the second quarter.
