Mixed fortunes for Moldovan pay-TV

April 28, 2020 10.03 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The number of pay-TV subscribers in Moldova stood at 335,400 at the end of 2019.

This, according to an annual report published by the regulator ANRCETI, was up from 329,700 a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the penetration rate of pay-TV services per 100 households stood at 37.5% at the end of 2019, up from 36.2% a year earlier.

TV Box was the leading provider of pay-TV services with 104,700, up from 89,600 a year earlier. It was followed by Moldtelecom with 72,500 (66,900) and Sun Communications with 43,100 (62,400), the remaining providers accounting for 115,100 subscribers (110,800).

The number of IPTV subscribers at the end of 219 stood at 180,500, or 52.8% of the total, while cable accounted for the remaining 46.2%, or 154,900 subscribers. The majority of subscribers (260,800) opted for digital and the remainder (103,400) analogue services.

ANRCETI notes that although revenues for audiovisual services increased by 20% to MDL298.6 million (€14.9 million), this was largely due to terrestrial services.

Indeed, pay-TV revenues fell from MDL162.1 million in 2018 to MDL156.6 million last year.

At the same time, pay-TV ARPU decreased by 6.5%.
