The Moldovan government has adopted a draft budget for next year that will see the imposition of a tax on leading IT providers.
According to Balkan Insight, the tax would amount to 20% of their profits in the country and bring in at least €5 billion in 2020.
This would help balance the budget, which is estimated to have a deficit of €370 million next year.
The proposed tax has been criticised by the opposition, which argues that it will cause the economy to collapse by hitting local companies.
International providers such as Netflix, Facebook and Google would meanwhile also have to register in Moldova besides pay the new tax.
