The BBC is to combine the separate apps it currently runs for BBC News and BBC Sport into the iPlayer.
From next January the text-based element of the Red Button service will also cease.
It’s planned that BBC iPlayer will become the home of much of the video content that is currently available on the BBC Sport and BBC News apps on TVs.
There will also be a connected TV version of the BBC Sounds app that brings together the BBC’s podcast and radio content.
“Unfortunately, to keep red button text services would require significant technical effort and cost, and would come at the expense of investing in other services,” explained Matthew Postgate, the BBC’s chief technology and product officer.
Video elements of the Red Button, such as additional courts at Wimbledon, or stages from Glastonbury – will continue.
