The Russian internet piracy market has not only stopped growing for the first time in five years but actually declined.
According to Group-IB, an international company specialised in the prevention of cyber attacks, it is worth $63.5 million, or 27% less than in 2018.
It adds that although the piracy market in Russia has grown “catastrophically fast” in the last five years, it has been dealt powerful blows in 2019.
As a result, it has shrunk to the level three years ago.
The main reasons for this reduction are a blow to the advertising model of monetisation of pirated resources; the fall of the big three pirate CDNs, which supplied content to 90% of online movie services in Russia and the CIS; and improvements to anti-piracy legislation.
