Sony says it plans to close its four-year old streaming service PlayStation Vue.
The company is blaming “expensive content and network deals” that have been slower to change than expected.
If anything such deals are becoming more expensive as the market prepares for new launches from Apple, WarnerMedia and NBC, not to forget established players Netflix and Amazon Prime.
“We are very proud of what PlayStation Vue was able to accomplish,” said John Kodera, deputy president, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “We had ambitious goals for how our service could change how people watch TV, showcasing PlayStation’s ability to innovate in a brand-new category within the Pay TV industry.”
PlayStation Vue will shut on January 30, 2020 with Sony moving to focus on the core gaming service.
