Piracy is a big issue for Synamedia as it aims to help customers secure revenues and protect content.
Speaking at a press event at IBC, Yves Padrines, chief executive, Synamedia, said that in terms of fraud and hacking, 4.5 billion credentials are available on the net to buy. Family and Friends password sharing is also a major problem.
With media giants spending an increasing amount of content – a projected $15 billion in the case of Netflix this year – Synamedia sees only two ways for them to recover their investment, namely advertising and subscriptions.
However, the problem with the latter model is the growing threat of streaming piracy.
When asked if Synamedia has any data on piracy, Jean-Marc Racine, the company’s chief product officer and general manager of EMEAR, said that while there are no figures in some countries they are as high as pay subscriptions.
He also said that although watermarking has a role to play it is not the only solution.
Racine nevertheless was of the view that the industry will get together and cure OTT piracy.
