Russia’s State Duma is set to adopt a new law designed to combat the illegal distribution of TV channels on the internet.
According to Izvestia, it would come into effect by January 2020 and create a unified system of legal distribution on the internet of the 20 must carry channels in the country.
It adds that the regulator Roskomnadzor would chose an operator through which all interested internet sites would receive unified content. Furthermore, this content may not be changed.
Sites that distribute TV channels that bypass this operator will be blocked.
The proposed law also says that the operator would be Russian owned, with the level of foreign participation limited to a maximum of 20%.
