An alliance of Italian television broadcasters is needed to take on the might of evidence, a former director-general of RAI has said.
Interviewed in La Stampa, Antonio Campo Dall’Orto said his former employer should work with commercial rival Mediaset
“The difference in content between the free and paid model is clear. After Netflix and Amazon Prime, it’s the year of AppleTV + and Disney Plus. Their offers are primarily based on exclusive, original and global content,” Dall’Orto told the paper.
He said the only thing that could be done was to offer a local aggregation service. Europe could not be taken as a single continental market because the Italians had different tastes to the French.
Dall’Orto, who during his time at RAI created the Raiplay portal, said co-operation was needed that could bring in original production from La 7 and Discovery.
Talking about his time at RAI, Dall’Orto said: “If I look back, I can only claim to have tried to combine innovation and expertise to develop a public service suitable for a company that struggles to be together”, he says, and then adds: “the fee is the way to allow the public service to play a role of social cohesion while society is challenged by a radical digital transformation “.
