Russia’s State Radio Frequency Commission has allocated a range of frequencies to the cable operator ER Telecom for 5G trials.
Izvestia reports that they are in the range 4.8-4.99 GHz and 27 GHz and will allow ER Telecom to start undertaking tests, probably from this autumn, in over 50 experimental zones located in – amongst others – Moscow and Moscow Region, St Petersburg and St Petersburg Region, Yekaterinburg, Ulyanovsk and Kaliningrad.
Despite this development, ER Telecom is not expected to become a fully-fledged 5G player.
Participants in 5G trials have to submit their results by September 2020 and 5G networks are expected to appear in major Russian cities early in the next decade.
