Ampere Analysis: Netflix extends online video reach over Facebook

July 2, 2019 09.38 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

The latest issue of Ampere Analysis Barometer says that Netflix extends online video reach over Facebook.

According to the Barometer, these are the Top 10 online video services.
– Internet users are most likely to have watched a video on YouTube in the last month.
– YouTube has the largest reach in all countries except the UK (BBC iPlayer) and China (iQiYi).
– Netflix has extended its lead over Facebook as the second most popular service.

YouTube is the most popular service in all countries except the UK, but viewers vary considerably
– The UK is the only country under study where fewer than half watched YouTube in the last month.
– YouTube attracted the highest proportions of internet users in South Africa.
– With the exception of the UK, Japan and France, more than six in 10 in each country watched YouTube in the last month.

Catch-up service attracts more viewers in Europe than the US
– Internet users in Europe are much more likely to have watched a catch-up service in the last month than those in the US.
– SVoD viewership is higher in the US.
– There is little difference when it comes to social video.

Facebook video views continue to decline, while Netflix increases
– Since Q3 2016, US and European viewers of videos on Facebook have declined from 28% to 23% of internet respondents.
– YouTube also recorded a slight decline from 70% to 66%.
– Over the same period Netflix viewers have increased from 22% to 37% of internet respondents, while Amazon viewers have increased nine points.

“YouTube’s global dominance in this space is evident in its monthly usage. The differences in viewing between the USA and Europe in relation to catch up and SVOD services is interesting because it shows that SVOD providers will have to work harder in Europe to grow their share as they take on traditional TV channels’ catch up services. This could be through their catalogue, price-points or communications strategy,” said Minal Modha, Consumer Research Lead at Ampere Analysis.
