MultiChoice has added 1.6 million subscribers across Africa, representing growth of 12% over the last 12 months.
The South African business grew by 500,000 subscribers. Revenues of R33.7bn, an increase of 3%, came despite the absorption of a 1% VAT increase. However, ARPU declined from R335 to R322, as subscribers turned away from premium services.
The Rest of Africa business grew by a massive 17% (1.1 million subscribers); viewers enjoying coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
It’s the first time that the Rest of Africa base of 7.7m subscribers has exceeded the 7.4m subscribers in South Africa.
“Our growth is exceptionally pleasing, especially in the current economic climate, and a clear indication that our strategy is working. We continue to believe in the growing appetite for video entertainment across the African continent,” said Group CEO Calvo Mawela.
The group generated revenue of R50.1bn, up 6% on 2018.
