Communications firm Altice Portugal and public broadcaster RTP have carried out the country’s first television transmission over a 5G network.
The president of the operator described the move as “historic and unprecedented”.
The so-called “real life demonstration” took place at the Altice Arena. A 5G station was installed that was allowed to connect a 5G station, installed in that space during the event, to the RTP facility in Monsanto.
“The demonstration consisted of a 5G pre-commercial ecosystem from the customer terminal to service platforms. The terminal equipment (router) was developed to support the new technology, which consists of a new radio network and a new network 5G control, as well as the use of a more complex and intelligent set of active antennas. With this system it is possible to reach a communication rate of up to 1.7 Gbps [gigabytes per second] “, explains Altice in a statement.
A decision on how 5G will be licensed in Portugal is still awaited.
