BT is reportedly in talks to join the shareholders in Britbox, the UK version of the streaming service being launched by ITV and the BBC.
The Sunday Telegraph says discussions been ITV, which makes dramas including Victoria (pictured) and Marcella and BT have already taken place, though there is disagreement over the size of the multimillion pound investment.
All three are already partners in YouView, which has become the operating system of choice for BT and fellow telco TalkTalk.
Britbox, which is already running in the United States, would cost viewers £5 per month. It’s expected both broadcasters would then begin to withdraw their content from Netflix.
BT has begun to place more of an emphasis on its broadband services that BT TV, which still holds the rights to the Premier League and Champion’s League football competitions.
BT made the final between Liverpool and Real Madrid available free-to-air, resulting in an audience if 11.3 million, higher than BBC or ITV at that time.
6.5 million watched on television with a further 4.8 million on digital platforms.
