Seven new industry players join HbbTV Association

May 16, 2019 11.22 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The HbbTV Association has announced that seven new companies have joined the industry association in the past six months.

The new members are leading technology, conditional access, multimedia software and hardware providers Arris (now part of CommScope), Irdeto, DATV, Enensys Technologies, Fluendo, Samba TV and SmarDTV Global.

“We are excited about so many diverse and significant industry players joining the HbbTV Association. It is a further confirmation that HbbTV is really a focal point where the TV experience of the future is being prepared, and we are glad to see these companies come to shape it with their peers,” said Vincent Grivet, Chair of the HbbTV Association.

HbbTV has been adopted in 36 countries around the world. Over 300 applications on more than 44 million consumer devices are using the open specifications to add features such as interactive services, OTT offers or targeted advertising to linear TV channels.

The latest addition to the specifications, the HbbTV OpApp, acts like a virtual set-top box inside the smart TV set, enabling platform operators to provide a branded, uniform user interface across different manufacturers. When switching the TV set on, it appears in the operator’s ‘look and feel’, ensuring a compelling user experience with the full range of services.

With the new members, the HbbTV Association’s membership base rises to more than 75 companies from all areas of the broadcast and broadband industry.
