The European Commission has approved a €150 million scheme by the Spanish government to mitigate the costs of moving DTT broadcasts to new frequencies.
The scheme, which has been approved under State Aid rules, follows a 2017 decision by the European Parliament to move DTT from the 700MHz band (694-790MHz) to lower frequencies. This would make way for new 5G mobile telephony services.
Meanwhile, the sub 700MHz DTT band would be retained until at least 2030.
The proposed aid will be granted to associations representing the owners of
affected multi-household buildings. It would cover the retuning of replacement of equipment within multiple dwellings.
Funds will be designed to incentivise the affected households to adapt their television reception equipment before the 700MHz band is vacated and reception is lost.
