Culture secretary Jeremy Wright has told a London conference that regulation of broadcasters is widely appreciated by audiences.
Addressing Enders/Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2019 & Beyond, Mr Wright said Netflix and Amazon Prime were now an established part of the media landscape and were appreciated by viewers.
However, he added the regulation that surrounded subscription video on demand was not “as robust” as seem in other areas.
“We place high expectations on our public service broadcasters to reflect and represent the full diversity of the UK’s nations and regions, and in doing so creating a product that often appeals across the globe.
“On-demand platforms undoubtedly have global appeal. But it is worth thinking about how we can encourage them to develop in a way that means the content produced here truly reflects UK audiences.”
Mr Wright said changes would be considered as the market developed.
