The Spanish National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Atresmedia and Mediaset, the country’s two leading broadcasters.
In a statement, it says that this is due to a possible violation of article 58.5 of the General Audiovisual Communication law.
The alleged breaches, which took place in 2016, refer to summaries of images from the National Football League (LNFP) in general interest programmes. These should be limited to 90 seconds per game, two broadcasts and within a period of 24 hours of the expiration of the images for the emission.
CMNC says that serious infractions of the law can result in fines ranging from €100,001 to €500,000.
It adds that the proceedings do not prejudge the final result of the investigation, which will be completed in a maximum of three months.
