Romania’s National Radiocommunications Society (Radiocom) has signed a contract for the provision of broadcasting equipment for the implementation of the national network on the first DTT multiplex (1), on which public TV channels will be broadcast.
Commenting on the development, Alexandru Petrescu, minister of communications and information society, said: “The signing of this contract marks the beginning of the implementation of the effective digitisation of terrestrial television in Romania, which is a major benefit for consumers because it offers access to high quality services, both picture and sound.
“At the same time, the implementation of the digital terrestrial television at the national level represents for Radiocom a new stage of modernisation in terms of increasing the competitiveness and diversification of broadcasting services”.
Radiocom days that the project will be deployed in 228 broadcast stations and allow for FTA reception of national TV channels by around 94% of the country’s population. The contact, worth RON59,371,706 (€12,458,200) excluding VAT, is the first acquisition of the DTT project. Furthermore, the financing of the entire project has been obtained from both the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Alpha Bank Romania, as well as Radiocom’s own sources.
Radiocom, which is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Society, is over seeing the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting for public TV programmes, with the process having got under way on June 17, 2015.
