Italy’s Rai has become the first broadcaster in Europe to publicly demonstrate 8K technology.
According to Digital Day, Luigi Rocchi, the director of its technological strategy, presented the first videos shot by Rai in the format at a conference when discussing the bill Open Access: innovation and future scenarios.
It adds that Rai aims to be using 8K in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Meanwhile, Tutto Tech notes that at present even 4K has yet to become established in Italy, with both Sky and Rai showing a limited amount of content in the format.
This is in contrast to what is already available online on the internet, which forms the basis for transmissions in 8K.
