Netflix has overtaken Canal+ in France after a surge in subscriptions in recent weeks.
The streaming service that has now been present in France for less than five years now has five million subscribers. The figure emerged last week during a meeting of the culture ministry, and was originally reported by Le Figaro.
It has subsequently been confirmed by Netflix.
In the third quarter of 2018, the Vivendi subsidiary had 4,757 million individual subscribers in France, not including the wholesale deals struck with the telcos.
So while Canal lost 233,000 subscribers in a year, Netflix has piled on the subs, adding 1.5 million since April 2018. This despite a significant price increase at the end of 2017.
Launched in 2014, Netflix France was estimated to have 900,000 subs by the end of the following year.
It currently has seven series for the French market in development, including Osmosis, which is slated for release in the spring.
