Molotov wins M6 case

February 12, 2019 11.32 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The Paris Commercial Court has ruled in favour of OTT platform Molotov in a dispute over the carriage of commercial channel M6.

On Monday, Satellifax first reported M6 was ordered to pay €150,000 to the start-up, €100,000 to repair its moral damage.

The dispute began in late 2017, when M6 began to insist that its channels be counted a pay-TV, rather than sit in the free tier.

There was concern this would impact on Molotov’s business model that hinged on its users upgrading from free to pay offers.

The court ruled that M6 did not have the right to impose such restrictions, saying the clause was discriminatory and created significant imbalance between the parties.

Molotov is now in exclusive discussions with Altice France to take a majority stake in the venture.
