Huge pay-TV win for Eleven Sports in Portugal

February 12, 2019 10.52 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Eleven Sports has signed long-term agreements with all four TV operators – Altice, Nos, Nowo and Vodafone – in Portugal. As a result, it will be available for subscription on TV platforms in 3.9 million homes, thereby achieving 100% pay-TV distribution in the country.

Eleven Sports notes that the partnership kicks off immediately, with all eight UEFA Champions League last 16 fixtures, including the game between AS Roma and FC Porto this evening (February 12) shown on Eleven Sports on all four platforms. Eleven Sports has been present in Portugal since May 2018, when it secured rights in the country for the UEFA Champions League and LaLiga. All content will be available on Eleven Sports on the four TV platforms for €9.99 per month or €99.99 annually, mirroring the price point of Eleven’s online streaming service in Portugal.

Commenting on the development, Marc Watson, executive chairman and group CEO, Eleven Sports, said: “This is a significant moment in our development as a Group, which also establishes Eleven Sports as a leading player in Portugal for the long term. We have great content and a great local team in Portugal and we are producing the best ever coverage of the UEFA Champions League and our other properties. The future in this market is very bright.”

Jorge P Sousa, MD, Eleven Sports in Portugal, added: “Our strategy has always been to be platform agnostic and to be available to all customers whether they want to watch online, through apps or on a traditional TV. With these agreements, we are fulfilling this commitment and making our premium content widely available and easily accessible for the customer at a very competitive price.

“The long-term commitment shown by the local operators validates the innovate approach Eleven Sports has taken in Portugal. We are excited to continue our development as the go-to destination for premium sports, driving engagement with sports fans across traditional and digital platforms.”

Since launching in Portugal last August, Eleven Sports has had over 200,000 app downloads, 9 million website views, and live action from 600+ sports events, equivalent to more than 1,300 live hours.
