The number of Ultra HD TV sets sold in Germany will break the 10 million barrier at the beginning of 2019, according to a forecast by industry association Deutsche TV-Plattform.
Driven by the continuing trend towards larger screen sizes and lower prices, sales of Ultra HD TVs in 2018 have risen by more than 32% compared to 2017. Due to the dynamic growth, Deutsche TV-Plattform expects a total of around 2 million UHD TV sets to be sold during the traditionally strong Christmas period and Q1 2019.
According to market research company GfK Retail & Technology, a total of around 8.3 million UHD TVs were sold in Germany between 2014 and the end of Q3 2018. UHD models are the best-selling equipment class among TV sets for the first time in 2018 with a share of around 52%.
Most UHD TV sets feature extended contrast range (HDR). There are two official standards for this with HDR10 and HLG. Of the 8.3 million UHD TVs sold in Germany by the end of Q3 2018, 74% support HDR10 and 51% HLG, according to GfK Retail & Technology. The figures for the sets sold since 2017 (including Q3 2018) are significantly higher: 83% support HDR10, 72% HLG. Deutsche TV-Plattform expects this trend to continue with HDR becoming a standard feature of UHD TVs.
