MTV’s EMAs to be broadcast in ultra-high definition

November 2, 2018 10.44 Europe/London By Julian Clover

UK platforms Sky and Virgin have secured the rights to broadcast this weekend’s European Music Awards in ultra-high definition.

The MTV EMAs 2018 will be broadcast live from the Bilbao Exhibition Centre in Barakaldo on November 4 and screened on MTV’s 60 international TV channels and digital platforms. Sky will take the MTV EMAs UHD feed for the second year in a row, while Virgin TV will take the MTV EMAs UHD feed for the first time.

We’re always looking for new opportunities to engage and inspire audiences and UHD is the latest offering with which to do that, so it’s important for us to be right at the forefront of this technology,” commented Arran Tindall, SVP Commercial and Content Distribution, Viacom International Media Networks. “We have longstanding partnerships with Sky and Virgin Media and are excited to have secured the UHD agreements with them, allowing fans watching on their TVs to see their favourite acts at the MTV EMAs 2018, up close and personal, with brilliant clarity.”

Sky will make the MTV EMAs UHD feed available live to its Sky Q customers via a trigger in the MTV HD channel feed. The agreement will also include Sky gaining the UHD VOD rights to a selection of shorter videos of individual artists performing at the event. This content will be made available to the Sky Q box and will be promoted in the UHD area following the live show.

Meanwhile, Virgin TV customers will be able to watch coverage of the MTV EMAs in UHD on a catch-up basis via Virgin Media’s TV Ultra HD channel, which debuted last month.
