German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF will transmit the matches of the German national team at the 2019 World Handball Championship and the 2024 European Handball Championship live.
SportA, the joint sports rights agency of ARD and ZDF, has reached an agreement with the rights holders Lagardère Sports for the World Cup and Infront for the European Championship.
In addition to the World Championships starting in January 2019 in Denmark and Germany, the agreement on the World Championships also includes the IHF Handball World Championships 2021, 2023 and 2025.
Besides the EHF European Handball Championships 2024 in Germany, ARD and ZDF also acquired the rights to the European Championships 2020 and 2022. Financial details were not disclosed.
“We are very pleased that the Handball World Championships have found their way back into free-to-air television and that we can continue to report live, competently and comprehensively on the European Handball Championships,” said ARD chairman Ulrich Wilhelm.
“This applies in particular to the 2019 Handball World Championship and the 2024 European Championship, both taking place in Germany, which we want to make an outstanding event for German television viewers,” added Wilhelm.
In addition to live coverage of the matches of the German team, the agreements also include footage from all other matches of the Men’s Handball World and European Championships.
