Five major US broadcasters have committed to the new ATSC 3.0 standard.
In an announcement at the NAB Show in New York, Fox, NBC, Univision, Tegna and Nexstar Media promised to work together on the standard in a bid to have it rolled out nationwide by 2020.
Among the features within ATSC 3.0 is an improvement in picture quality for terrestrial broadcasts, immersive audio, better indoor reception automotive services and advanced emergency alerting.
The group will look to smooth the eventual transition between ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0.
It’s anticipated that other stations will join the consortium at a later stage.
Already manufacturers Samsung, Sony, and LG are producing TV sets with the standard.
