The use of live television via streaming (OTT) on smart TV sets continues to grow.
While mobile devices were the main devices used initially, 41% of users are now streaming on Smart TVs, according to Zattoo’s TV Streaming Report.
For the survey, the market researchers from Kantar TNS interviewed 1,000 German internet users between 14 and 69 years of age. With a tablet or smartphone, 26% and 25% respectively watch live TV via streaming.
63% of respondents use YouTube and 59% use catch-up TV services. 41% use video-on-demand services and 27% stream live TV at least occasionally.
43% can imagine watching television exclusively via the internet in the future. 3% already use this option, just 12% can’t imagine it.
For more than one in two (54%), time-shifted television is the biggest advantage of TV streaming. For 39%, availability on many devices, for example on smartphones, tablets, laptops and smart TVs, and on various platforms (iOS, Android, Windows 10) comes in second place.
“We are convinced that television via the internet will become the standard. Our first TV Streaming Report shows this trend,” said Jörg Meyer, Chief Officer Content and Consumer at Zattoo. “Television today has to function just as individually and conveniently as Netflix and YouTube in order to meet user needs. We make this possible with features for time-shifted television like live pausing or online recording. With products such as our programme recommendation service Recommender, we also support the personalisation of the TV experience.”
