The Hungarian regulator NMHH has fined Magyar Telekom and its CEO a total of HUF61.5 million (€190,200) for failing to fully comply with a decision it made in 2015.
In a statement, NMHH says that Magyar Telekom still fails to legitimately notify around one-seventh of its late paying customers and the way in which it then limits the services they receive does not comply with the provisions in force.
Under the terms of the law, providers have to give their customers the opportunity to settle their debt. At the same time, during a period of restriction, they can limit the services they receive. In the case of TV, their viewing can be limited to only a few channels.
According to NMHH, such restrictions on services are subject to strict statutory conditions because they restrict the most important customer entitlement and the right to use the service. NMHH also says it sees he infringements made by Magyar Telekom as being particularly serious due to its strong market position and that they have also affected other market players.
It now requires Magyar Telekom to submit a plan of action to terminate this illegal situation.
The telco has been fined HUF60 million and its executives (CEO) HUF1.5 million.
